PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — The biggest contest in Putnam County elections in 2021 was for County Sheriff, as incumbent Robert Langley, Jr. was ousted by Kevin McConville.

The race was contentious. After a phone call went public between Langley, a first-term Democrat, and ousted Carmel Town Supervisor Ken Schmitt complaining about his fellow Republicans, McConville, who last sought the office in 2013, alleged the two had engaged in an illegal conspiracy to prevent him being elected. Also read Langley's response.

Plus, County Executive MaryEllen Odell, Langley's bitter political foe since he defeated incumbent Sheriff Donald Smith, published a news release attacking him on the county website and as a letter to the editor: read it here and Langley's response here.

Many of the candidates running in Putnam in 2021 were uncontested, including in Brewster, where Mayor James J. Schoenig, Justice Andrew W. Negro and Village Trustees Christine M. Piccini and George J. Gaspar ran unopposed on the Best For Brewster party line.

However, in Southeast, two seats on the town council were contested by five people as incumbent Eric Larca and his running mate Eric Cyprus sought re-election.
