PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — The Putnam County Land Trust will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a sunset sail on the sloop Clearwater.

The Clearwater, modeled after the Dutch vessels that sailed the Hudson River in the 18th and 19th centuries, was the brainchild of legendary musician Pete Seeger to save the river, which in the 1960s was utterly degraded with with raw sewage, toxic chemicals and oil pollution. The effort created a graceful tool for environmental education and local history and in the process made the Hudson River clean-up a model for conservationists.

The Putnam County Land Trust will take its Celebratory Sail on the Hudson River on Sept. 7.
