Putnam Officials to Open 50-Year-Old Time Capsule Tuesday

A number of awards will also be distributed at the event.

The office of the Putnam County executive released the following Monday morning:

On Tuesday, June 12, Putnam County will be celebrating its 200th birthday. To honor this historic event, the time capsule, which has been buried in front of the County Courthouse for the past 50 years, will be opened and have its contents displayed.

The opening ceremony will commence at 10 a.m. in front of the Historic Courthouse on Gleneida Avenue in Carmel.

The Master of Ceremonies for the event will be County Historian Denis Castelli. During the ceremony there will be the presentation of the General Israel Putnam Award to County Legislator Richard T. Othmer for his immense military and community service, which will be presented by Sheriff Donald B. Smith.

There will also be the annual County Historian awards presented to people throughout the county who have made significant contributions to local history, the historian’s office or the archives based on a set of standards in place within that office. 

The opening of the capsule will be conducted by Dr. Eugene Boesch and will be filmed by Brian Vangor.

There will be a celebratory reception immediately following the event in the lobby of the County Building.
