UPDATE: Armed Standoff in Southeast: Police

Neighbors evacuated, roads closed on Nichols Road near Route 121

Threats and shots from inside a home on Nichols Road near Route 121 have drawn a massive police response.

According to the Putnam Sheriff’s Office, the situation is on-going.

The Putnam Emergency Response Team, state police and investigators, sheriff’s deputies and investigators have established a perimeter around the house.

Police said at about 12:15 p.m. a Southeast resident made a phone call in which he expressed thoughts of suicide and threatened to shoot police officers who came to the house.

Sheriff’s deputies and state troopers were dispatched. When they arrived they heard gunshots from inside the house.

Nichols Road and part of Route 121 were closed to traffic. Authorities evacuated several nearby houses, using an armored vehicle to retrieve some residents, and activated an automated phone system to notify neighbors to stay inside.

NY Route 121 between I-84 and Red Fox Lane was closed at at 2:22PM in Southeast due to police activity, according to the state Department of Transportation.

It could be closed until after 6 p.m.
