Concerts Around the Corner: “From Russia, With Love”
The Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition presents The Russian Trio at the Studio Around the Corner, Sunday June 29th at 5PM
The Russian Trio has a wide-ranging repertoire, from folk melodies to the staples of classical programs. Tamara Volskaya, (domra) and her husband, Anatoly Trofimov (banyan) are “Honored Artists of Russia”, winners of international and national competitions and professors of the Mussorgsky Ural State Conservatory in Ekaterinburg, Russia. They have toured throughout Russia, Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan and the United States. “…the astonishing domra player, a wizard of the strings… and I say this without reservation” London, Classical Guitar Magazine. Leonid Bruk, (contrabass balalaika) studied music in St. Petersburg. He was deeply attracted to the powerful sound of the contrabass balalaika and has played for many years in various folk groups in Russia and in America.

These veteran performers will bring their unique brand of virtuosity and humor to the audience at the Studio Around the Corner. The program will include Russian, Ukrainian and other folk melodies, classical showstoppers by Sarasate, Dvorak and Paganini and even a piece in Dixie style!
About the instruments: The Domra is a four stringed plucked instrument resembling the mandolin; the Banyan resembles an accordion, but has buttons instead of keys and the Balalaika-contrabass is a three stringed double bass sized instrument, played with a leather pick.

The next concert in the series is Sunday, July 13 at 5PM: “The British are Coming: Concert, Lecture, Exhibit”. Violinist, Robert Zubrycki and his colleagues will perform British music for piano, strings and tenor. Amy Campanaro, Director of the Southeast Museum will provide historical narration and a collection of artifacts from the Museum’s archives will be on display.
