The Schoolhouse Theater continues its 2014-2015 season with the Pulitzer prize winning play, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. Written by Paul Zindel, and will run from March 6 through March 29, 2015.

Gamma Rays was considered one of Off-Broadway’s greatest successes, presenting a powerful and moving study of a shy, quiet, intelligent girl who somehow finds the strength to survive inside a disturbed family. In addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1971, it also won the Obie Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play of the season. Elizabeth Van Dyke whose directorial credits include The Ballad of Emmett Till, The Piano Lesson and Zora Lives, will direct this production. In 1972, Paul Newman produced and directed Joanne Woodward in a critically-acclaimed film based on the play.

From April 24 through May 10, the Schoolhouse will stage the unique one-woman show A Living Documentary, written and performed by Cynthia Hopkins. TimeOut New York called Hopkins a “breathtaking visionary.” A Living Documentary is a comedic, take on the oft risky adventure of earning a living as a professional theater artist in the 21st century. Hopkins plays herself and an eclectic cast of characters. The piece also includes some of Hopkins original music which will be performed both live and via recording.

Over the years, The Schoolhouse Theater has earned a reputation as the go-to theater in Westchester, where audiences can see Broadway quality productions at a fraction of the cost. The Schoolhouse is a regional Equity theater, dedicated to presenting professional productions by award-winning playwrights and supporting and promoting all the arts.
