Spring Parenting Classes

Last Classes Before Fall!

By Carol Dores

We have two classes starting soon - Mondays May 9-June 20 6:30-9:00 PM, and Saturday May 21, June 4, June 18, 8:30 AM-1 PM. These are the last parenting classes being offered until the Fall. Registration and payment must be done at least one week prior to the first class. Visit www.positivedisciplinect.org/parenting-classes/ for more information, to register and pay.

We get a lot of questions about the Positive Discipline Parenting Classes, and thought we’d share them.

Q: My kids aren’t bad, so I don’t need a parenting class, do I?

A: Even the “best” children can push our buttons. The classes help us understand why children behave the way they do, and we learn different tools to help our children grow and learn. We learn how to build a calmer house, where cooperation is strong. We learn how to calm down, and ways to express feelings that are more likely to be heard. We learn how to empower our children, and encourage them to be the best that they can be.

Q: I cannot get my kids out of the house on time. I end up yelling, doing things for them, and feeling rushed and crazy. Can this class really help?

A: Yes! We learn tools that help children with routines, and empower them to do all that they are capable of doing. Many parents have had this same issue, and things improved dramatically after taking the class.

Q: I’m feel pretty good about how I parent. Why would I need a parenting class?

A: Parenting classes help us build better relationships with our children, and everyone else in our lives. We learn new skills and strategies for helping our children become responsible, resilient, self-reliant and confident people. We develop a better understanding of why, at times, our children misbehave, and learn how to turn these moments into opportunities to learn. While there never will be a “perfect” child or parent, we can all use to grow and improve!

Q: Does my spouse or parenting partner need to take the class with me?

A: While ideally both parents would take the Positive Discipline parenting class, it is not always feasible. Often, the parent taking the class will begin making changes, and his/her spouse will begin reading the Positive Discipline book or tool cards. Sometimes, a spouse will not want to change their parenting style. The child(ren) will still benefit from the new tools and strategies being used by one of the parents.

Q: One of my children causes all of the problems. Can this class really help?

A: Yes. There are a lot of different tools and strategies that we learn and practice in the class. We learn about how children feel when they misbehave. It is often a discouraged child that misbehaves the most, and we learn how to encourage them.

Q: I cannot afford the full cost of the class. Are there scholarships?

A: Yes, there are scholarships available. You can get the application here.
