College To Hold Memorial Concert For Slain Student

The music major was shot and killed just off-campus last week in upstate New York.

POTSDAM, NY — In memory of Elizabeth Howell, the SUNY Potsdam senior from Patterson, New York who was shot and killed Friday while walking home from class, the Crane School of Music will hold a musical remembrance at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall.

It will be followed by a gathering at the memorial space in her honor, which is filled with flowers, mementos and notes to her family, college officials said.

A faculty-led vigil is planned for Thursday.

The music school released a video excerpt Wednesday (watch, above) from the 2021 Crane Candlelight Concert, with the Crane Chorus and Crane Symphony Orchestra performing an arrangement of “Peace Like a River.” It is from the traditional holiday concert at The Crane School of Music, and is presented courtesy of Mountain Lake PBS, which films and televises the concert.

Howell can be seen performing in the cello section at approximately 2:32 and 3:54 of this video.

"This was Beth's last concert performance with the Crane Symphony. She would have been on stage again as the principal cellist with the symphony tomorrow night," said Alexandra Jacobs Wilke, director of public relations for SUNY Potsdam. "That concert has been postponed, in light of this tragedy."
