Superhero dogs need temporary homes

Nonprofit seeks foster homes for future autism service dogs

BluePath Service Dogs is looking for volunteers in lower Dutchess County to open their hearts and homes to extraordinary future service dogs. BluePath dogs provide safety, companionship and opportunities for independence for children and families touched by autism.

Volunteer fosters care for young adult dogs for six to eight months while the dogs complete BluePath’s Formal Training Program. They will transport the dogs to and from Hopewell Junction 3-4x each week for training. No previous experience is necessary - just a love of dogs and a desire to make a difference in the world.

BluePath’s service dogs significantly reduce parents’ safety concerns and help children lead fuller lives. Reduced stress, improved sleeping routines, and more meaningful social interactions can allow families to feel a renewed sense of hope and empowerment.

“Our family’s autism service dog has literally saved my son’s life,” said Tricia Zarro, autism mom and BluePath Board Chair. “She has made my son’s journey full of more joy, more safety and more social experiences then I could have ever imagined.”

According to the Autism Society, more than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder. It is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States, with a 119.4 percent increase in diagnoses from 2000 (1 in 150) to today (1 in 68).
