Talk of 2013 Fireworks Comes Early [POLL]

The skies over were dark and quiet this Fourth of July, but officials are hoping community efforts can change that for next summer.

Citing several complaints from residents regarding the lack of a fireworks show in Southeast this year, the Town Board discussed the possibility of restoring the celebration next year.

Deputy Supervisor Bob Cullen broached the subject during the end of a work session Thursday night. He asked if fellow trustees would be in favor of beginning fundraising efforts sooner than later.

Cullen suggested that donations from businesses and local folks could support the show, which came to a halt this year because of what Supervisor Tony Hay called "financial problems." He when he took office in January.

Officials estimated that the entire production, from hiring the fireworks company to renting porter potties, ran about $10,000 in years past. 

Others trustees, including the supervisor, supported the idea. Hay called last year’s show—which the Board voted against funding for similar financial reasons—as a “political event.” Then-Supervisor Michael Rights .

A number of earlier this month. Most of the comments expressed disappointment. Some called for the Board to seek sponsorship for future shows.
