Wind Chill Advisory Extended For Putnam County

The National Weather Service says gusty winds will continue to intensify the cold for another day.

BREWSTER, NY — The deep freeze gripping the Hudson Valley will be accompanied by gusty winds for longer than originally predicted. The National Weather Service has extended its Wind Chill Advisory for Putnam County through sunrise Sunday.

  • WHAT...Very cold wind chills expected. The cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. Expect wind chills to range from 10 below zero to 20 below zero.
  • WHERE...Portions of northeast New Jersey, southern Connecticut and southeast New York.
  • WHEN...Until 8 AM EST Sunday.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills. Frost bite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken. Make sure you wear a hat and gloves.

"Daytime temperatures will remain in the single digits through the entire afternoon. That is an extremely rare event in the Hudson Valley… and is roughly 30 degrees below average!" said Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "But winds on Saturday will continue to blow at 5 to 15mph… and gust over 25mph at times out of the northwest. It is THAT WIND, that will create “real feel” temperatures WELL below zero."
