Woman Leaps to her Death from High I-84 Bridge near Brewster

She left a note with the names and phone numbers of her children, police said.

In an apparent suicide, a woman jumped from the Veterans Memorial Bridge on I-84 near Brewster Dec. 30, police said.

The divided spans, also known as the high bridge, 90 feet above a road shared there by Routes 6 and 22.

Police said a man driving on I-84 saw a car stopped on the bridge and then saw a woman walk across the span from the right shoulder to the left side of the roadway and reach for the railing.

He stopped an notified a road work crew of what he had seen.

Almost simultaneously, the Putnam Sheriff’s Office and the County 911 center received calls about a woman lying in the road beneath the bridge.

The county coroner pronounced her dead at the scene.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office said they found, in the car, the woman’s driver’s license and a note with the names and phone numbers of her children.

Her name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
