• Frouin Earns Early CAREER Award for Turkana Basin Research (stonybrook.edu) — A Stony Brook University geosciences professor has won a major National Science Foundation CAREER award, one of the largest such grants the university has received, to study Kenya's Turkana Basin using advanced luminescence dating. Her project will expand research and hands-on training opportunities through Stony Brook's Luminescence Dating Research Laboratory and a new FIELDwork initiative, and she's actively welcoming interested STEAM students to get involved.
   

• Starry Nights: Astronomy Night Kicks Off Its 54th Consecutive Year (stonybrook.edu) — Stony Brook University's popular Astronomy Open Night series returns September 4 for its 54th consecutive year, offering free monthly public talks and rooftop stargazing on campus. Born from 1970s excitement over comet Kohoutek, the program now draws families, students, and local skywatchers to accessible lectures by Stony Brook astronomers, with the Undergraduate Astronomy Club running telescopes when weather cooperates.
   

• 2026 Impact NextGen Honoree: Rachel Hacken (pollstar.com) — A music industry honoree traces her career back to organizing shows as a teen in her hometown of Stony Brook where she first connected with a major booking agent. Now an artist manager in Los Angeles, she reflects on her path from Long Island venues to global tours and calls for greater inclusion of LGBTQ and BIPOC artists in rock and metal.
