Long Island fall fairs and festivals 2026 (newsday.com) — Stony Brook Village will be a fall hotspot, with its free 36th Annual Scarecrow Competition lining village walkways Oct. 3–25 and a Halloween Festival with trick-or-treating and scarecrow awards on Oct. 31. The wider roundup also details dozens of other Long Island fairs and festivals, giving Stony Brook residents plenty of nearby options for autumn outings.
   

2. Renaissance School of Medicine Welcomes 136 First-year Medical Students in Annual White Coat Ceremony (stonybrook.edu) — Stony Brook's Renaissance School of Medicine just welcomed 136 new medical students at its White Coat Ceremony, marking their official start in the profession. Most of the class hails from New York, many from Long Island, and leaders emphasized human connection and compassion in medicine as they begin training at the public medical school based in Stony Brook.
   

3. Kenny Loggins Documentary to Kick Off Opening Night at 2nd Annual LIMEHOF Music Documentary Festival (iloveny.com) — A three-day music documentary film festival is coming to the Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame in Stony Brook Village from September 25–27, headlined opening night by a Kenny Loggins documentary and a Q&A with director Dori Berinstein. With 43 films from 11 countries and tickets on sale now, it's a rare chance to see a major premiere without leaving Stony Brook.
   

4. Digital Twin Technology Could Advance Power Grids (tomorrowsworldtoday.com) — Researchers at Stony Brook University are building a new Digital Twin Studio in Stony Brook to help utilities predict and prevent power outages from storms, equipment failures, and cyberattacks. Using high-performance computers and drone mapping, the team will model neighborhood power networks, support student training starting in 2027, and collaborate with industry partners to make local energy infrastructure more resilient.
   

5. Library of Congress Website Features Stony Brook Collection of 9/11 Oral Histories (stonybrook.edu) — Stony Brook's World Trade Center Health and Wellness Program has its extensive 9/11 oral history project newly featured on the Library of Congress website, preserving nearly 500 responder interviews. The collection, led by Dr. Benjamin Luft, supports research and public understanding, and a related documentary will be screened at the Staller Center as part of Stony Brook University's September 11 commemoration.
