City Won't Tear Down Landmarked 'Castle' Precinct Building In Sunset Park: Report
The stables underneath, though, will reportedly be no more.
SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — The city won't tear down a landmarked old police precinct building to make way for a new school on the corner of 43rd Street, according to a report.
Instead, the building with castle-like features will be gutted while preserving much of the building's facade; the ground-floor horse stables though, will be no more, according to Brooklyn Daily.
That news comes as a relief for people in the neighborhood who were afraid that they could lose the historic building, which used to house the NYPD's 68th Precinct and Brooklyn Police Department's 18th Precicnt.

The building is designated a city landmark by the National Register of Historic Places.

School Construction Authority reps raised the controversial possibility of knocking over the crumbling landmark to erect a 300-seat school last summer, but couldn't move forward with plans until the State Historic Preservation Office okayed the project. Officials rehashed the design and settled on a compromise that saves most of the facade but sacrifices the horse stable, much to the locals' rejoicing.
