Sunset Park Block Party Marks Next Chapter In Neighborhood Mural Tradition

SUNSET PARK, NY— Residents will have the opportunity to help paint a new community mural celebrating Sunset Park's cultural diversity during the 54th Street Block Party on Saturday.

The community paint day will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at the corner of 54th Street and Fifth Avenue, outside the Citibank building.

The event is free and open to all ages.

Organizers encourage participants to wear clothes suitable for painting. Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult. No RSVP is required.

The mural, selected through a year-long community planning process, celebrates the neighborhood's multicultural identity and long-standing history.

The design features two women dancing, a familiar scene in Sunset Park and during parades along Fifth Avenue, surrounded by flowers representing cultures from Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Sunset Park is home to nearly 60,000 foreign-born residents, according to the City's 2026 Newest New Yorkers report

Immigrants from China make up the largest share, accounting for 27,792 residents, or 46.7 percent of the neighborhood's foreign-born population.

They are followed by immigrants from Mexico with 10,144 residents, the Dominican Republic with 4,849, Ecuador with 2,600 and Guatemala with 1,552.

The artwork also incorporates a brownstone facade, the steeple of St. Michael's Church and the view from Sunset Park, recognizing the community's decades-long effort to preserve the neighborhood's historic architecture, scenic views and connection to the working waterfront.

A coalition of 54th Street and Sunset Park residents organized the project with support from the Sunset Park Business Improvement District.

The mural continues a tradition of public artwork on the wall that dates to the late 1970s.

Neighbors helped shape the design through workshops, surveys, community meetings and door-to-door outreach over more than a year. More than 100 residents voted to select Brooklyn-born mural artist Danielle Mastrion to create the final design.
