SYOSSET, NY — A swastika drawn inside a bathroom at a Syosset school led to a larger investigation that uncovered explosive materials at a student's home on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

After determining that a 15-year-old had drawn the swastika, officers responded to the teen's home, where they discovered several chemicals had been combined to create explosive materials, police said. NCPD evacuated the residents of the home and those of neighboring homes, as well, police said.

The Nassau County Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Response Team responded and removed the hazardous material from the home, police said. Other responding units included the Nassau County Fire Marshal, Arson Bomb Squad, and Nassau County Police Emergency Service Unit (ESU), police said.

Upon investigation by detectives, it was determined that the teen's father, Francisco Sanles, 48, had, on multiple occasions, paid for the chemicals, police said. Both Sanles and the 15-year-old were placed under arrest at approximately 1:35 p.m., NCPD said.

Sanles was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of fourth-degree criminal facilitation, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and reckless endangerment, police said. He will be arraigned on April 23 at First District Court in Hempstead, NCPD said.

The 15-year-old was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal mischief, first-degree aggravated harassment, and making graffiti and will be arraigned at Nassau County Family Court in Mineola, police said.
