Syosset 2.0

The present state of Jackson Avenue, being ripped up, seems to be consistent with the street's current surroundings...Could it be that we are all just for the next version of Syosset to come about?

The present state of Jackson Avenue, being ripped up, seems to be consistent with the street’s current surroundings in Syosset. We have already seen Blockbuster go bust and now it looks like Borders Book Store will be the next vacancy.

I read through the comments from I can understand how Syosset residents will miss one of their favorite places to get a cup of coffee, or a place they can relax and browse. However, I also consider myself to be an early adopter so I have had a Netflix account for some time now, and I have been using my iPad to read eBooks since the first version came out while my husband enjoys his Kindle. Could it be that we are all just waiting with open arms for the next version of Syosset to come about? Are we waiting for a new version of an old town which just might match our new age lifestyles better than the old one?

The past several weeks in the tri-state area have been quite eventful in the digital and social media space. There was Internet Week in New York City as well as the Social Media Club of Long Island celebrating its first Summer Social. In my new age journey, I finally got to meet a vendor of mine who came into town from Shanghai, China to participate in several key Internet Week events. We had a chance to discuss our latest plans to engage our IBF customers in the Chinese Social Media space. He took me to his office space, which was located in Manhattan in the heart of the Flatiron District. But this was not a typical working environment; it was a co-working space complete with cushions on the window sills, desks, couches, coffee, beer, water and more.

The best part about his office was something that cannot be seen at any glance - The best part about his office was that he works their rent free. Wix.com sponsors the space and offers it free of charge to bright talented people who are either telecommuting or starting their own business. Anyone who uses this space is encouraged to “checkin” on Foursquare, Facebook and other networks. This helps to bolster word of mouth advertising to promote the Wix.com website/mobile sites, Facebook Fan Page and their ultimately their software.

When I walked in to pick up my vendor for lunch, I found the place quiet but packed with familiar faces. I immediately noticed another friend of mine sitting in the corner, tapping away on her keyboard getting in last minute work before her lunch date. It was revolutionary.

So perhaps we need to open our eyes to a new way of living in this ever changing economy, forward thinking , and communities gathering not only for a cup of coffee but to share work experiences. This could possibly lead to developing a team to push through the very concept of Syosset 2.0, a sustainable Syosset.  The possibilities are endless.
