Syosset Board of Education Candidate Q&A: Sonia Rutigliano

Continuing to provide the children with the education each of them deserve to succeed.

1.     What is the biggest issue currently facing the Syosset School district and board?

The biggest issue facing the Syosset School district and board this year was presenting a budget which stayed within the tax cap of 2.2563 percent. We did so without cutting any of our stellar programs or services, while meeting all the new state mandates imposed on the district. This was achieved by all bargaining units working collaboratively with the board to present a fiscally responsible budget.

2.     What is something you believe the board does well? What is something you would like to improve?

The board is made up of 9 responsible, mature, respected adults. As a board, we work cohesively to maintain the level of education, which Syosset School District is known for. We are all on the same page in realizing that the education of the children is our number one priority, while being fully aware that household incomes have limits. I would like to expand our communicative efforts with the community through our district website and parent portals.

3.     What is something different that you bring to the table?

Being the parent of four very different children gave me an insight that has enabled me to objectively look at the needs of the students in the district.  I feel that my experience as a parent has helped me understand the complexity of a school district and what it takes to maintain the level of excellence. Also being a business owner, I have been able to apply my business experience when discussing budgetary issues.

4.     Fast-forward five years. Name an achievement and a challenge for the district. (essentially 1. How you would like to see the district in 5 years and 2. Put yourself ahead of the curve to anticipate future challenges).

When I fast-forward, I want the continuity of excellence. I see a board that continues to work cohesively in order to maintain the high level of academics within the financial parameters that the state imposes on the district. The future challenge remains meeting the state mandates while providing the education this district is known for and parents have come to expect, with a consideration for taxpayers with limited financial resources.

5.     What makes the Syosset district special/what makes you care about the district on a personal level?

What makes Syosset district special is that there is something for everyone.  Not everyone can learn the same or have the same interest and that certainly applied to my four children.  The district prides itself on its diversity.  I chose to buy my home and have a business in this district. The same excitement that I felt as a new homeowner I still have now.  The sense of pride I have felt with my children’s accomplishments is the same pride I feel today when I look at the accomplishments of the district.
