PSEG Long Island Preparing For Tropical Storm Hermine

Residents can call their 24-hour electric service number in case of any power outages this weekend.

PSEG Long Island announced they will be preparing for Tropical Storm Hermine, which could possibly impact Long Island with effects lasting through the Labor Day holiday weekend into Tuesday.

Hurricane Hermine made landfall in Florida early Friday morning before weakening back into a tropical storm that will likely bring "significant impacts" to Long Island starting late Saturday after it tracks up the East Coast, according to the National Weather Service.

PSEG Long Island said they will be closely monitoring the storm, which could potentially bring heavy rain and strong winds.

In anticipation of the storm, PSEG Long Island will have personal prepared to respond throughout the Labor Day weekend and into next week. They will also have additional supplies, including poles and transformers, are on hand.

In addition, they will be installing barriers at several substations in order to keep the water out and have already elevated some substations above flood level.

“Depending on the track of the storm, Hermine may stall off Long Island’s coast, bringing prolonged periods of wind and rain to our service territory,” John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island vice president of transmission and distribution operations said.

Local residents are warned that if they see downed lines to always consider them “live" and to not approach or drive over a downed line or touch anything that it might be in contact with.
