Syosset Athletes Honored by Board of Education

The Syosset Board of Education recognized a number of athletes and teams for their athletic accomplishments during the winter and spring seasons.

“This has been a tremendous and exciting year for Syosset athletics,” said Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Drew Cronin. “I have never seen a season like this before and give great credit to all of our dedicated coaches and student-athletes.”

The following teams were recognized at a June 15 business meeting:

• Boys varsity lacrosse team, who secured the Long Island Class A Championship.
• Girls varsity lacrosse team, who won their first ever Nassau County championship.
• Boys varsity track and field, who were named the county champions in both the winter and spring seasons, bringing the total number of consecutive county wins to 10.
• Boys tennis, who were the undefeated county champs with a record of 16-0.
• Wrestlers Vito Arujau and Alexander Vargas, who both had outstanding seasons. Arujau was honored for securing a second state championship, while Vargas is now a three-time county champion, a two-time state champion and a national champion.
• Swimmer Tamir Zitelny, who won the Nassau County and Long Island championships in the 100 butterfly and earned All-Long Island honors for his backstroke.
• Girls golf, who won their second consecutive Long Island championship.

The following athletes were recognized for their achievements:

• Varsity boys Tennis – Dylan Granat and Daniel Shleimovich (County Champions - Doubles)
• Varsity Boys Winter track – William Anderson, Mohammed-Ali Dewji, Alex Hoelzli, Tyler Italiano, and Evan Garry (County Champions)
• Varsity Boys Winter Track - Eric Sheng (State Champion)
• Varsity Boys Spring track – William Anderson, Tyler Italiano and Isaac Guak (County Champions)
• Varsity Girls Spring track – Meghan Galvin, Reilly Siebert, Tracy Go, and Tierney Latham (County Champion)
• Varsity Girls Golf – Elizabeth Choi (Four-time County Champion)
• News 12 Scholar Athletes - Eric Sheng and Tyler Italiano
