Chris zeroed in on the teacher who taught him Sports Marketing: “He set up a fantasy football league to teach us how to market our own franchises,” wrote Chris. The teacher was able to incorporate sports news to show how it affected the marketing world, making learning all the more intriguing. “Whether it was designing a mascot or advertising my team, I actually felt like the owner of my franchise.”

Chris is applying to college now, leaning toward mechanical engineering as a career. He likes to build things. His favorite subjects are math and science. He plays on sports teams – volleyball in the fall, baseball in the spring. He plays violin in the school orchestra. And he is active in community service , helping to raise money for children who can’t afford life saving operations.

Chris has a personal interest in that cause. This is not the first essay contest he has won. His previous winning essay was in a program called “Believe, Dream, Inspire.” And he does inspire. Chris is a cancer survivor and he wrote about believing he could get through what he went through, and come out on the other side. Chris then went on to volunteer over the summer at Sunrise Day Camp, helping children with cancer.

As the winner in the High School Division of the 14th annual School Essay Contest of the Long Island Presidents’ Council of New York State United Teachers, Chris’ winning essay will be aired, in his own voice, on eleven radio stations in September. He recorded his essay at the studios of Ray Adell Media Enterprises, in Huntington. His message will air on WALK FM, WBAB FM, WBLI FM, WBZO FM, WHFM FM, WHLI AM, WJVC FM, WKJY FM, WLNG FM, WWSK FM and WTHE AM.
