Syosset's Robbins Lane Holds 'Sticks and Stones' Assembly

Performing artist Lyle Cogen sings about friendship to the students.

Submitted by Syosset School District

Students at Robbins Lane Elementary School, in the Syosset Central School District, were treated to a special assembly on Oct. 9 that centered on how to be both friendly and a friend.

The assembly featured “Sticks and Stones,” a musical play written, produced and presented by performing artist Lyle Cogen. Cogen used the play to teach students about the many ways name-calling can hurt and ostracize others. She also sang songs that encourage friendship and embracing each other’s differences.

The event was made possible by the Robbins Lane PTA in recognition of October as National Bullying Prevention Month. In “Sticks and Stones,” a brother and sister both experience bullying from their peers, as well as peer pressure and the loss of friends. Cogen plays all of the characters, making costume changes in front of a 3-D set design.
