Today's riddle: What do evil hens lay? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. St. Joseph's Health security to gain peace officer status amid rising violence (cnycentral.com) — Security officers at St. Joseph's Health Hospital in Syracuse and its affiliated centers will soon gain state-authorized peace officer powers to better handle rising violence against staff and patients. The change, already law but months from full rollout, will let specially trained officers remove trespassers, issue appearance tickets, and make limited arrests, potentially easing pressure on Syracuse police while aiming to keep hospital workers safer.
2. Retired Syracuse teacher Maryse Whorrall celebrates 100th birthday (syracuse.com) — A beloved former Jamesville-DeWitt French teacher who spent decades living near Nottingham High School is celebrating her 100th birthday after a life that began in Nazi-occupied Marseille. Now living in Manlius, she's remained deeply involved in Syracuse's French and arts communities, from Everson Museum tours to the Syracuse French Club and weekly French-only lunches at local spots including Drumlins' Bistro 1926.
3. Mingle at Drumlins Block Party or compete in game show this week (dailyorange.com) — Syracuse University's Welcome Week is packed with free, in-person events at the JMA Wireless Dome, Shaw Quad, and Drumlins Country Club, including a game-show challenge and the iconic block "S" photo. You can also catch a centennial block party at Drumlins and a storytelling event organized by the Syracuse Black Maternal Health Committee at the Community Folk Art Center.
4. Fire breaks out at vacant former Sears store in Syracuse, no injuries reported (cnycentral.com) — Syracuse firefighters quickly knocked down a stairwell fire Tuesday evening at the long-vacant former Sears store on South Salina Street, with no injuries reported. Crews stayed to vent smoke from the massive south side building, which has sat mostly empty since 1974 despite a 2025 state plan to turn it into a semiconductor training hub that still hasn't broken ground.
