📰 News we're reading

• What are the bottlenecks in housing production leading to Syracuse's housing crisis? (centralcurrent.org) — Syracuse leaders and developers say the city is far behind on the housing construction needed to keep rents in check and prepare for Micron-driven growth. They point to restrictive zoning, complex financing, and slow permitting as key bottlenecks, while city officials tout recent permitting reforms and new investments aimed at speeding up large-scale, affordable projects.

• Westcott Theater's permitting troubles continue: Syracuse police shut down another event (syracuse.com subscription) — Syracuse police shut down a large, unpermitted event at the Westcott Theater and cited its manager, escalating a long-running dispute over the venue's entertainment license. A state judge is weighing the owner's lawsuit challenging the city's licensing rules, even as the theater advertises many future shows amid questions about what it can legally host.

• Man fatally shot outside Parkside Commons, police say (syracuse.com) — A 51-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday night near the Parkside Commons apartments at East Fayette and Allen streets in Syracuse, and police are still searching for the shooter. Officers found the victim in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, and investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Syracuse Police Criminal Investigations Division.
