Councilors backed an investigative platform for Syracuse police, upgrades to local fire stations, and $750,000 for the Greater Syracuse Land Bank to tackle vacant properties. Street signs will temporarily celebrate Cass and Matthews' decades of neighborhood service.
2. SGA strives for campus visibility, targets concrete change (dailyorange.com) — Syracuse University's Student Government Association is kicking off its 70th session with new positions, visibility events outside Schine, and a push to turn student complaints into real policy changes. Leaders are rolling out initiatives like bystander training, a free textbook giveaway at Bird Library, and expanded public health and traditions boards to better serve SU students.
3. Stroke couldn't stop him: Jim Hickey finishes 100-mile walk for 9-year-old cancer patient (cnycentral.com) — In Syracuse, a 65-year-old cancer survivor finished a 100-mile walk at NBT Bank Stadium to support 9-year-old neuroblastoma patient Jazalyn "Jazzy" Moses. After suffering a stroke early in the journey, Jim Hickey still completed his promise, with the Syracuse Mets highlighting Jazzy's fundraiser on the video board. Jazzy couldn't attend due to a brain hemorrhage earlier in the week.
4. Man going to prison for trying to truck 200 pounds of marijuana from Akwesasne to NYC (wwnytv.com) — A federal jury in Syracuse convicted a man of transporting over 200 pounds of marijuana, and he's now been sentenced to 27 months in prison plus a fine. The case was tried in Syracuse's federal court after Border Patrol seized the drugs during a traffic stop between the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation and New York City.
5. Money from Micron: Sign up now for free funds for kids (wwnytv.com) — Micron's massive semiconductor project near Syracuse is now tied to a new savings account program that could put millions of dollars into accounts for kids in Jefferson and Lewis counties. Families can sign up under-18 children for "Trump Accounts," which Micron is seeding as part of a $250 million, multi-state investment meant to help future workers and residents build long-term savings.
