Man fatally shot in Syracuse had shot a man earlier this year but that killing was ruled self-defense (syracuse.com) — Syracuse police have identified the man fatally shot Saturday outside the Parkside Commons complex as 51-year-old Willie Hill Jr. of Syracuse. Hill had previously faced weapons charges in a February fatal shooting ruled self-defense, and detectives are now asking anyone with information on this weekend's East Fayette Street killing to contact the department.
2. Falk College adds nutrition track to Bachelor of Science major (dailyorange.com) — Syracuse University's Falk College is rolling out a new applied nutrition track within its Bachelor of Science in nutrition, open to all new nutrition majors this fall. The change follows the closure of separate nutrition science and food studies majors, giving students more customizable, science-based options tied to health, sports nutrition, and related careers.
3. Syracuse.com's 2026 fall media day girls swim roll call and takeover (45 photos) (syracuse.com) — Girls swim and dive teams from across Section III, including Syracuse City, Cicero-North Syracuse, Liverpool and more, gathered in Cicero for syracuse.com's fall media day. Coaches and athletes posed for photos, did interviews, and previewed their upcoming season, with more local coverage and galleries promised in the coming weeks.
4. Syracuse.com's 2026 cheerleader polls: Got your back? Choreography whiz? (syracuse.com) — Section III cheerleaders from schools across Central New York, including Cicero-North Syracuse, Henninger, Corcoran and Syracuse Academy of Science, name the teammates they trust most in stunts and choreography. The feature-style poll offers a fun snapshot of team chemistry and standout leaders as fall sports get underway.
5. Money from Micron: Sign up now for free funds for kids (wwnytv.com) — Micron's massive semiconductor project near Syracuse is fueling a new savings account program that could send millions of dollars to children in Jefferson and Lewis counties. Families can sign up now for accounts that may help local kids eventually buy homes, start businesses, or pursue education, while also preparing many of them for future Micron jobs.
