📰 News we're reading

1. How Can You Check the Safety of a Syracuse Neighborhood (conservamome.com) — If you're weighing a move within Syracuse, this guide walks you through using local police statistics, the city's open data portal, and New York's sex offender registry to gauge neighborhood safety. It also stresses visiting blocks in person and talking with residents so you can balance hard numbers with real-world impressions before deciding where to live.

2. Syracuse Police swarm Wolf Street; neighbors report possible shooting (cnycentral.com) — Syracuse residents on Wolf Street saw a heavy police response Tuesday afternoon, with neighbors telling reporters they believed a shooting had occurred, though officers have not confirmed that. The gathering happened near a memorial for 17-year-old Kevin Cuozzo, who was fatally stabbed in Washington Square Park in July, a case prosecutors recently ruled self-defense.

3. Common-Council-2025-recap-Budget-cuts-affordable-homes (dailyorange.com) — Syracuse's Common Council just released its first detailed "Legislative Year in Review," highlighting major 2025 budget cuts, new local laws, and recommendations to change how the council operates. The report explains big shifts like a $16 million budget reduction, a new 2% city hotel tax, and affordable housing projects in East Adams and Eastwood Heights, aiming to help residents better understand and influence local government.

4. Ahead of budget season, Onondaga County Legislature's advisory board shares proposed solutions to housing crisis (centralcurrent.org) — Onondaga County's Housing and Transportation Citizen's Advisory Board has unveiled proposals that could shape future housing and transit options in Syracuse, including a builders fund, zoning updates, and complete-streets studies. With Syracuse currently building only about 1,000 units against much higher demand, officials are urging residents to weigh in before the 2027 county budget process begins this month.

5. Artists examine chance, experimentation in 'Strike It Lucky' exhibit (dailyorange.com) — Syracuse art lovers can still catch the "Strike It Lucky" exhibit at the Nancy Cantor Warehouse, where students, faculty, and alumni explore chance and experimentation across sculpture, film, and mixed media. With works tackling themes from women's medical experiences to memory and environment, organizers are inviting the community to a closing reception on Friday to meet the artists and discuss their processes.
