Today's riddle: What has a cap but no head? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Man and dog displaced after house fire in Syracuse (syracuse.com) — A Syracuse man and his dog are displaced after an electrical fire badly damaged their home on Clarence Avenue Friday morning, though both escaped without injury. Firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze but had to open walls and insulation to prevent rekindling, and the Red Cross is now helping the resident while the street was temporarily closed to traffic.
2. Syracuse VA Medical Center Expands Acute Care Capacity with New 12-Bed Unit (va.gov) — Veterans in Syracuse now have more local hospital capacity, with the Syracuse VA Medical Center opening a fully renovated 12-bed medical-surgical-telemetry unit on 7B. The expansion is part of broader growth plans, including a Community Living Center addition, aimed at bringing more veterans' care back in-house and improving coordinated, veteran-centered treatment across Central New York.
3. Centro Turns Bus Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign (wxhc.com) — A Centro bus unveiled at Crouse Health's Pomeroy Center in Syracuse is turning bright pink all October to spotlight the Central New York Men Wear Pink breast cancer campaign. Local leaders and 30 ambassadors will use the rolling billboard to raise money for the American Cancer Society, supporting research, patient programs, and education across the region.
4. Friday Headlines: Ferry Tale Edition (streetsblog.org) — Two statewide political and policy stories directly affect Syracuse readers: President Trump is slated to campaign with gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman in the city, and Syracuse officials have ended their contract with Flock, pulling license plate readers from city property. However, similar cameras remain in use by county agencies, Syracuse University, and nearby schools, raising ongoing privacy and policing questions for local residents.
