Mayor Walsh Signs Declaration For Curfew In City Of Syracuse

Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh signed a Declaration of a State of Special Emergency shortly after Midnight on Sunday, May 31. The declaration invokes an immediate curfew in the City from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. which will remain in place until terminated by the Office of the Mayor.

The curfew “prohibits all persons from remaining in any public place during the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., which shall include a prohibition on pedestrian and vehicular movement into or within the City or any area of the City; except persons providing essential services such as fire, police, law enforcement, ambulance, and/or hospital services including the transportation of patients thereto, utility emergency repairs and emergency calls by physicians.”

Late Saturday night, the Mayor issued a statement regarding the protests:

“Like other cities around the nation, Syracuse is the site of protests and anger tonight regarding the killing of George Floyd. I share their outrage and support the peaceful actions they engaged in throughout the afternoon and evening. Late tonight, some protesters turned more aggressive and dangerous despite urging otherwise from most of those involved. I ask all participants to stop any actions that risk their safety and that of our City and to disband. My commitment is firm to strengthen and improve police community relations and ensure equitable law enforcement in the City of Syracuse. We can emerge from this national crisis stronger than ever.”
