Onondaga Center Seniors Enjoy Painting With 5th Grade Visitors

Minoa Elementary School 5th Graders Join Residents Monthly For a Creative Day Out

Residents and staff at Onondaga Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on East Avenue in Minoa spent much of the day on Monday, April 30th with 5th grade students from Minoa Elementary School painting flower pots for spring. Since last December, Onondaga Center has partnered up with the school and the group of 5th graders, also known as the Jr. Crew, to come to the Center to spend time with the kids and take part in a number of activities, this time it was painting pots.

The residents truly love it when the kids come by,” said Amy Gannon, Recreation Director at Onondaga Center. “These kids are genuine an for our seniors, it puts them on top of the world when they see today’s young people drop by for a visit. As a neighborhood facility, we are looking for community service opportunities for the kids.

The agreement between the school and the facility is for the kids to come to Onondaga Center on a monthly visit. There is a parent and teacher who head this group and they assist with various projects at school throughout the school year. Tomorrow (May 9th), the students will return to Onondaga Center to help the residents plant flowers then help to place around the facility.
