State Police Cuomo Bridge Crackdown Nets 287 Tickets, 39 Impounded Vehicles

The enforcement action focused on missing, altered and obscured license plates used to avoid tolls and evade traffic cameras.

TARRYTOWN, NY — Toll evaders and scofflaws were targeted in the latest enforcement crackdown on one of New York's busiest bridges,

State Police Troop T conducted another ghost plate and toll enforcement detail Tuesday on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, part of what is described as an ongoing effort to address a. growing problem.

Troop T's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit also took part in the detail to enforce safety standards and regulations for commercial vehicles. The unit conducted 32 inspections during the operation. (NYSP)

According to NYSP, 287 tickets were issued during the operation. The violations included suspended or unregistered vehicles, unlicensed operators, speeding, cell phone use, no seat belts and violations of the "move over law." One driver was arrested for DWI, according to police.

State Police said the detail on Tuesday focused on ghost plates and toll enforcement on the bridge, where missing or obscured plates can interfere with toll collection and traffic camera enforcement.

The operation also led to 39 vehicles being impounded for unpaid tolls, according to State Police.

Troop T's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit also took part in the detail to enforce safety standards and regulations for commercial vehicles. The unit conducted 32 inspections during the operation.

Of those inspections, 10 commercial vehicles were immediately taken out of service because of safety-related infractions, according to State Police. In addition, 96 violations were issued involving equipment, permit and registration problems.
