Avoid 10% penalty - if you pay your taxes one day late excessive fine

seeking a change in NYS law to authorize local towns to reduce penalties if one is late paying taxes by even a day

Reminder-Friday, January 31 is the last day to pay the 2nd half of your school taxes. If you are one day late there is a 10% penalty which could be $1,000 or more for some taxpayers. School taxes represent over 60% of your total tax bill in most school districts. The penalty is not set by the town. Will be pushing for state legislation that will allow local governments to reduce the penalties to an amount more reasonable. Over the years some residents have had legitimate excuses for being a day or two late: serious illness, death in the family, hospitalization. We couldn't waive the penalty --and that was wrong, in my opinion.
