Avoid 10% penalty on school taxes-- pay by January 31st

the law should be changed---the 10% penalty is excessive, in my opinion. Some taxpayers (in past years) received penalties of over $1,000

Reminder to pay second half of school taxes by January 31st- please see what I posted on the town website). The penalties for late payments are extremely high -10%. Penalties are not set by local governments. In the past some residents have complained after getting a penalty of over $1,000 when they paid their tax one day late. I have reached out to the state comptroller's office over the years to highlight my concerns. Officials claim that municipalities cannot waive the penalties. That's why I'm sending this reminder out. I think the law needs to be changed. Local governments should have the ability to waive or reduce penalties.
