We are excited to hold Open Mic Night in hybrid form, both in-person at HVWC and virtually!

Physical and virtual doors open at 7:20 pm for event starting at 7:30 pm. Due to popular demand to participate, we’ve had to limit the amount of readers to 20.

All performers, whether “in person” or on Zoom, will be given a 5 minute spot. The “in person” performers at HVWC will perform. The online, virtual performers will also take their turns. Due to the new zoom technology installed at HVWC both groups will be able to see each other perform. Both groups will have 10 “performer” spots available to them.

We will have a virtual audience as well as a live audience!&nbsp;Virtual audience seats&nbsp;are free and unlimited, as long as you pre-register below. The Zoom link will be sent the day of the event.&nbsp;A limited number of free&nbsp;“in person” audience seats&nbsp;will be available to those who pre-register. There will be no seats available on the night of the Open Mic. You MUST pre-register.

All genres welcome&nbsp;—&nbsp;fiction, non-fiction, poetry, music, comedy, storytelling, other. Open Mic will give you an opportunity to share your talents in a nurturing, comfortable space with some great people.&nbsp;Your<a target="_blank" href="https://writerscenter.kindful.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">&nbsp;donations are welcome</a>!

Saturday, May 16th, the Town of Greenburgh will hold its 3rd annual Artists and Crafters Market at Presser Park (former Webb Field), 218 S. Central Avenue, Hartsdale. This free, family-friendly event is dedicated to introducing and promoting local artisans and fostering a deeper appreciation for the creative process within our community. More than 30 artists and crafters of all ages and in all media will showcase and sell their creative expressions. Each exhibitor also will offer a free, hands-on lesson, presentation, creative experience or something interesting and dynamic for marketgoers of all ages. The Artists and Crafters Market will take place from 11 am until 4 pm - with a rain-date of Sunday, May 17th. Free parking is available nearby.

Culture, cuisine, and comedy came together to form an intricate network of hotels, bungalow colonies, and resorts throughout New York’s Catskill Mountains. With a strong Jewish lineage, the Borscht Belt came to be known as a distinctly American story—one represented by a diverse clientele that journeyed to the mountains in search of fellowship, basking under the warmth of the summer sun. Now, with the remaining hotel structures vanishing one by one, it is through these remaining artifacts, such as matchbooks, silverware, menus, and even architectural details, that this story can be shared. The lecture employs these relics to share with visitors the complete and complicated story of the Borscht Belt—one that extends before the Civil War and reveals the many industries, as well as individuals, that made it successful.

A&nbsp;historian, musician, and lecturer who focuses on the neglected history of the Catskills and Hudson Valley region, Alex Prizgintas serves as president of the Woodbury Historical Society in Orange County, New York, and has been published in the&nbsp;Hudson River Valley Review&nbsp;and the&nbsp;New York Archives Magazine. A preservationist, Alex stewards the&nbsp;<a href="https://alexprizgintas.com/borscht-belt-tourism-history" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Richard L. Benjamin Collection of Borscht Belt Tourism History</a>, which contains hundreds of documents, postcards, and ephemera from the Borscht Belt era. Many of these items will be brought to the lecture for attendees to view live.

Combining magical realism with traditional documentary techniques, Among Neighbors examines the mystery of a small, rural town in Poland where people of two different faiths lived side by side for centuries — until the killing began. The film reveals both love and betrayal as it zeroes in on a crime committed among neighbors: the murder of Holocaust survivors, six months after the end of World War II. The chilling facts revealed in this documentary have led the office of Poland’s nationalist president to call for a ban on the film.&nbsp;
The Special Event Release includes 25 minutes of additional content in the form of a brief introduction by its award-winning filmmaker Yoav Potash, and an in-depth post-film Q&amp;A compilation filmed live at sold-out screenings that reveals the fascinating making-of stories––as well as the ongoing controversy––behind this critically-acclaimed film.&nbsp;

The Nyack Famous Street Fair will be returning on Sunday, May 17 from 10 to 5 in downtown Nyack. This is the ultimate shopping and dining event you do not want to miss. The fair features over three hundred exhibitors, from four states with arts, crafts, new retail, home décor, and unique gifts set up in tents lining Main, Broadway and Cedar Streets. For the foodie’s festival foods of all kinds will be available including food trucks. Music will be located at the Gazebo on Main Street. Be sure to stop by the great restaurants and outdoor cafes with many offering fair specials. Nyack’s unique shops and boutiques are a must see.

So many of the places we choose for “eating out” experiences have wonderful settings in historic buildings. A few have been places to gather for food and drink since the 1700s. Others are former farmhouses. Gilded Age mansions have been repurposed as grand dining establishments, fit for weddings and other celebratory occasions. Westchester can also claim several restaurants that have had wild success in clever adaptive reuse of older, sometimes unusual, structures. Our restaurants often reflect the history of our county, of America.&nbsp;
Barbara Davis, Executive Director of the Westchester County Historical Society, is the guide in this culinary tour that covers more than three dozen restaurants throughout Westchester, including the 1740’s Horse and Hound Inn in South Salem, The Fish and the Farmer in Purdys, Jean Georges Inn at Pound Ridge, and many others.&nbsp;

Join us for an evening where poets, storytellers, and musicians share space and truth. Whether you have a poem in your notes app, a song in your chest, or want to listen and be nourished by community, this space is for you. No experience required. No perfection expected, just presence.&nbsp;Centered on respect, expression, and collective care. Come to perform or witness from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. once a month.

Doors open at 6:30 pm for event starting at 7:00 pm. Register online through this ticket link to secure your performer or audience spot. We will admit folks at the door until we reach capacity, but online registration ensures your admission. 

Admission is $5.00 for everyone--no matter whether you are an audience member or a performer. 
There are 10 performance slots available in advance--through this online registration ticket. There will be a few in-person spots available as well--first-come, first-served. Each performer must respect the time limit: 3-5 minutes per person.
