The Hudson Valley Writers Center (HVWC) is pleased to announce its 2026 Annual Gala, themed “Your Waters, Your Melodies: A Benefit Celebrating the Power of Language in Concert with Our Natural World.” The gala will be held Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 6-9 p.m. at <a href="https://abigailkirsch.com/signature-properties/tappan-hill-mansion/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Abigail Kirsch at Tappan Hill Mansion</a> in Tarrytown, New York. This year, the Hudson Valley Writers Center is proud to recognize two honorees whose work bridges storytelling, culture, and environmental stewardship:

 <li>Haleh Liza Gafori (Literary Honoree): A New York City-born translator, performance artist, poet, and educator of Persian descent. </li>
 <li>Riverkeeper &amp; President Tracy Brown (Community Honoree): Riverkeeper protects and restores the Hudson River and its tributaries while safeguarding the drinking water supply for nine million New York City and Hudson Valley residents. </li>

The NAACP Ossining Branch will meet on Zoom this Thursday, Sept 17 at 7:00. In addition to our business agenda, Branch President Harry Campbell will introduce&nbsp;Christina Chure Leon, Community Outreach Coordinator for Neighbors Link, a local organization whose mission is to "strengthen whole communities through healthy integration of immigrants... helping to educate and empower families." Join us for a work-in-process concert of excerpts from The Cut Loose: A Harlem Brownstone Ritual, followed by a conversation with the audience.
The Cut Loose will premiere next year as an immersive experience in a Harlem brownstone transformed into a living archive of Black cultural memory. This performance at the David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center offers an early look, as award-winning choreographer and director Jeffrey Page and his creative team present a selection of songs from the show.
The Cut Loose centers on Mimi and her profound love for Kidd Bunky, a man who is brilliant, charismatic, full of promise, and notoriously unfaithful. When Mimi realizes love has not made him hers, she turns to Marie Laveau, the legendary 19th-century New Orleans spiritual leader who was both a lifelong Roman Catholic and the city’s most renowned Voudou priestess.
What first appears to be a house gathering reveals itself as a New Orleans jazz funeral. It is not only a farewell to Kidd Bunky, but also a collective act of release, honoring the people, traditions, and moments that shape us even as they move beyond our grasp.
Inspired by Arthur Hall’s groundbreaking 1977 production Fat Tuesday &amp; All That Jazz, this new work explores Black Mardi Gras, Black Masking traditions, New Orleans ritual life, jazz, and cultural survival. Rather than reconstructing Hall’s original work, The Cut Loose enters into dialogue with it, asking how these traditions evolved as they traveled across generations and geographies.
Blending theater, music, ritual, and communal experience, The Cut Loose is a celebration of resilience, remembrance, and transformation. It is an invitation to honor what we love by learning how to let it move.&nbsp;
This event will be followed by a reception in the DR Center Gallery, now showing <a href="https://www.rbf.org/pocantico/events/woven-wonders-kykuits-picasso-tapestries" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Woven Wonders: Kykuit’s Picasso Tapestries</a>.&nbsp;
Guests may arrive 45 minutes prior to the event start time to enjoy the new <a href="https://www.rbf.org/pocantico/historic-site-tours/dr-center-temporary/sculpture-walk" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sculpture Walk</a> outside the DR Center. Please note that events will begin promptly at their scheduled start time. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of staff.

We are excited to hold Open Mic Night in hybrid form, both in-person at HVWC and virtually!

Physical and virtual doors open at 7:20 pm for event starting at 7:30 pm. Due to popular demand to participate, we’ve had to limit the amount of readers to 20.

All performers, whether “in person” or on Zoom, will be given a 5 minute spot. The “in person” performers at HVWC will perform. The online, virtual performers will also take their turns. Due to the new zoom technology installed at HVWC both groups will be able to see each other perform. Both groups will have 10 “performer” spots available to them.

We will have a virtual audience as well as a live audience!&nbsp;Virtual audience seats&nbsp;are free and unlimited, as long as you pre-register below. The Zoom link will be sent the day of the event.&nbsp;A limited number of free&nbsp;“in person” audience seats&nbsp;will be available to those who pre-register. There will be no seats available on the night of the Open Mic. You MUST pre-register.

All genres welcome&nbsp;—&nbsp;fiction, non-fiction, poetry, music, comedy, storytelling, other. Open Mic will give you an opportunity to share your talents in a nurturing, comfortable space with some great people.&nbsp;Your<a target="_blank" href="https://writerscenter.kindful.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">&nbsp;donations are welcome</a>!

As part of his residency at The Pocantico Center, artist Alejandro Piñeiro Bello opens his studio inside the David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center to the public. Piñeiro Bello will be presenting a new body of watercolor works developed during his time at Pocantico. Drawing on the landscape, architecture, and history of the estate grounds, this collection reflects his ongoing exploration of place, memory, and light through watercolor. &nbsp;
Visitors will have the opportunity to view the works in progress and speak with the artist about his process and creative influences.&nbsp;

A native of Madrid, Spain, Dan García is an active classical guitarist and an integral part of the New York City Latin and World Music scene. His repertoire ranges from the Renaissance period through the 20th Century, featuring composers such as Villa Lobos, Manuel Ponce, Francisco Tárrega, Isaac Albéniz, Agustín Barrios, and others.&nbsp;
Daniel holds a Masters degree in classical guitar performance from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati and is professor of Music at Manhattan University.
Free and open to all.

The Jay Heritage Center (JHC) is proud to welcome educators to our site during September 2026, Constitution Month, to commemorate our nation’s journey towards independence and democracy. The free program is co-sponsored by the Mid-Hudson Social Studies Council. The event will be the first of many lively conversation about America at 250 with some of our country’s leading history scholars. It is open to teachers throughout the Mid Hudson and Sound Shore communities as well as Fairfield County.
Professors David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman and Beverly Gage will take the stage at the new Wachenheim Center to examine the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. The panel will discuss what the United States and the Constitution have meant to citizens over time and how that vision has changed or stayed constant. &nbsp;The event is FREE but registration is required. Pianist Wu Han, violinist Philip Setzer, and cellist David Finckel opened our 71st season and they are back, renowned for their exceptional chamber music performances. Audiences will recall Finckel and Setzer's long tenure with the legendary Emerson Quartet. Han and Finckel lead the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Music@Menlo chamber music festival in the San Francisco Bay area. Their all-Schubert program includes the Piano Trio No.1 in Bb Major, Op.99 and the Piano Trio No. 2 in Eb Major, Op.100. Socialize and meet the artists at our post-concert reception.
