Deer Shot Illegally In Tarrytown

Authorities said the person accused of shooting the deer used a bow within 150 feet of a dwelling.

TARRYTOWN, NY — State Department of Conservation officers were called to Tarrytown Jan. 8 for a report of a deer being shot in a residential area. ECO Kevin Wamsley was contacted by the Tarrytown Police Department who said the deer had been shot and was in the process of being cut up.

When Wamsley responded to the location, he and Tarrytown police found an area under a deck with a large amount of blood and deer hair.

The person who was suspected of shooting the deer was interviewed and claimed he had shot the deer that morning because it had been eating a bush in his backyard.

However, deer hunting season in Westchester County had ended Dec. 31.

Wamsley said he found two piles of bait at the location where the deer had been shot from the second floor balcony.

The deer's carcass and an axe used to cut the meat into smaller pieces was found in the person's garage, officials said.

Wamsley said that the suspect did not have permission from his neighbors to shoot a bow within 150 feet of their homes. The nearest neighboring house was only 73 feet from where the bow was discharged.

The person was given four summonses returnable to the Village of Tarrytown Court, including discharging a bow within 150 feet of a dwelling, illegally killing a protected species, hunting deer with the aid of bait and taking of an antlerless deer out of season.

Police said the deer was seized and donated.
