Don't Miss: Sleepy Hollow & Tarrytown October Tours

For the communities' annual Halloween season, The Historical Society is offering two chances to get glimpses into the past.

TARRYTOWN, NY — It's that time of year when Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown become meccas for seasonal tourism. Now The Historical Society, Inc., a private not-for-profit organization founded in 1889 and dedicated to the study and appreciation of all aspects of the history of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, is offering folks a new way to enjoy the communities during the Halloween season.

You can get spooked and learn some local tales during these historical walks. All tours are at 10 am and start and end at Patriot's Park. Advance reservations are required.

Tarryhollow: Heroes and Traitors Tour

Although small in size, the villages of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow have been home to larger than life personalities and events that shaped American history. On this two-hour walking tour, you will learn about the men and women of the Philipse family, some of the largest landholders in colonial New York, who lost everything by backing the wrong side in the American Revolution. You will visit the Captors Monument and learn about the three local militiamen who captured British spy Major John André, triggering the discovery of Benedict Arnold’s treason. You will hear about Amanda Foster, born free to a mother who may have been a slave of Governor DeWitt Clinton; she overcame immense obstacles to become a successful entrepreneur, church founder and participant in the Underground Railroad. Heroes and happenstance, traitors and treason – all awaiting your discovery in one history-packed square mile.

TarryHollow: Walking Through Time

The Historical Society presents the walking tour of all walking tours, especially if you’re interested in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow! This two-hour tour will introduce you to the unique history of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow and to some of the most intriguing people who have ever lived here. The guides will lead you through the many sections of our historic Hudson River villages and regale you with enticing tales of local lore. Starting from Patriots Park, you will journey past historic sites and buildings while the guides share stories of the individuals who made these places their home. The tales include historical accounts of real people and events, as well as a few unexplained incidents from the area’s legendary past. Each of our past residents has left their mark on the community, and a few of them may still linger nearby!
