Dr. James M. Ryan named Interim Superintendent in the EUFSD

Ryan has 50 years experience in the field of education

At its regular meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, the Elmsford Union Free School District Board of Education appointed Dr. James M. Ryan as Interim Superintendent. Dr. Ryan will serve as such through the remainder of the 2023-24 school year.

Dr. Ryan addressed those in attendance at the Board meeting, noting his enthusiasm for joining the EUFSD.

“I am delighted to join you,” Dr. Ryan said. “I know there is a lot of work to be done.”

After hearing presentations by members of the student council and by others who spoke about one of their teachers, Dr. Ryan said too that he was very impressed by “the passion and enthusiasm of students. It’s wonderful to see.”

“If you have questions or concerns, there is plenty of time to raise them,” he said.

Dr. Ryan has 22 years of experience as a superintendent in nearby districts. He served as District Superintendent at Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES until his recent retirement in June 2023. Prior to that, he was Superintendent of the Carmel Central School District until 2015.

The interim superintendent began his career in education as a fourth-grade teacher at the Toddville Elementary School in the Lakeland School District. Throughout his career he has held positions as assistant principal, principal, Director of Secondary Education and Personnel, and Director of Program Development and Human Resources.

“We welcome Dr. Ryan to our school district and appreciate his educational record of serving school districts throughout the region in a variety of capacities,” Board President David Hecht said. “Dr. Ryan has an extensive resume in the field of education. There is no doubt our students and faculty will benefit from his leadership experience.”
