TARRYTOWN, NY — There are four baby peregrine falcons in residence atop the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and they are waiting to be given names. The state Thruway Authority has invited local elementary and middle school classes to suggest names through the month of May as part of the bridge's annual Falcon Naming Contest.

Following Memorial day, the public will have the opportunity to vote on the students' choices during a week-long online poll.

The classes whose names are picked will be recognized with award certificates and given commemorative posters of the falcons.

Previous winning names include Hudson, Bridge-ette, Zee, Irvwing, Puente and Tarrytalon.

Before this season, the falcons nested in a box on the Tappan Zee Bridge. The new nest is near the top of one of the bridge's 419-foot towers.

You can keep track of the baby falcons' progress by using the Thruway Authority's FalconCam here. Just beware that the camera, which takes a photo each minute, could show actions that may be unpleasant to watch, and it is possible that some of the fledglings may not survive into adulthood.
