Repair Café—free repairs at the Theodore Young Community Center from 11 AM to 3PM (32 Manhattan Ave, White Plains)

This Saturday May 18th the town will host our first repair café. The idea for a repair café was born in Amsterdam in 2009. There are now more than 1,700 repair cafes offering their services in 35 countries around the world. I attended a Repair Café in Irvington last year and was so impressed! This is the first time there will be a repair café serving unincorporated Greenburgh.

Repair cafes are free, community run meeting places where locals can bring broken items for volunteers to fix. Frustrated with a throwaway culture, the International Repair Café slogan is “Toss It?” NO Way.” The repair café reduces waste, reduces the need for extraction and production of raw materials and promotes community sustainability.

This event is being organized by the Fairview Empowerment Group and the TDYCC. When I was approached by a White Plains resident asking if the town would be interested in setting up a Repair Café in town I knew that if I reached out to the Fairview Empowerment Group – the event would be a big success. This all volunteer community group never disappoints and has worked very hard to enhance the lives of many residents in our town. They have organized free movie nights at Travis & Massaro Parks. Two years ago they sponsored different fun events at our neighborhood parks.
