“GREENBURGH HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE STATEMENT ON PITTSBURGH MASSACRE
Saturday’s murders of 11 Jewish people in a Pittsburgh synagogue by a neo-nazi have horrified us.
They come the same week in which prominent critics of the President were targeted to receive mail bombs and two African American shoppers were murdered at a Kentucky supermarket by a white male who had just failed to gain entry to an African-American church.
These criminal acts based on race, religion and political beliefs – all within six days – reflect a dangerous mood of violent intolerance in our nation that only seems to be on the rise.
The Town of Greenburgh’s Human Rights Advisory Committee continues to work on efforts to reverse that trend. We advocate on behalf of our society’s most vulnerable; we have championed legislation protecting the immigrant community both in our town and in New York State.
We have engaged in various forums that aim to bring inequities to light through such events as our monthly film series and public access TV program. We have been active with area students in organizing the successful Westchester March For Our Lives and with numerous community groups to organize various rallies, including the Rally Against Hate. We have worked for safer conditions on behalf of those who use the County bus line.

And we remain very involved in the fight against organized racism and acts of hate; most recently, we have proposed the County establish a Task Force on Hate Crimes and Hate Incidents.
