Greenburgh's 2nd Self-Defense Class is Saturday

The main focus is sexual assault prevention, but the lessons are good for all and residents 6 and up are invited.

The second in a two part series of self-defense seminars sponsored by the town of Greenburgh will be held this Saturday.

The seminars are geared towards women’s sexual assault prevention, but are open to all residents 6 and up, said Greenburgh town Supervisor Paul Feiner.

You do not have to have attended the first class to come to the second; first-time participants are encouraged.

The program is bringing together participants of various backgrounds, from college students to adults, with an age range of 6 to 90.

Last week’s seminar was an overview of basic self-defense; participants were introduced to fundamental strikes like punches and palm heels and learned the proper techniques to defend against a choke or bear hug from multiple angles. Participants also learned some important fundamental principles of self-defense, such as to always address the immediate threat during an attack, and where on the body to hit for maximum impact.

During Saturday’s seminar, participants received self-defense training from Steve Sohn’s Krav Maga Muay Thai Fitness Training Center and listened to a presentation of safety tips from Officer Dandreano of the Greenburgh Police Department.

Next week’s seminar will review and build upon these skills. Instructors will be teaching several of the self-defense techniques introduced during last week’s seminar in-depth, breaking them down step-by-step. Participants will learn to defend against a variety of chokes as well as attacks from the ground, and review the outside blocks introduced during last week’s class.

The seminar runs from 1-3 p.m. Aug. 1 in the administration building of Anthony F. Veteran Park, Heatherdell Road, Ardsley.
