Horsemen Boys Lose to Greeley in Yorktown Hoops Tournament

The George Budries tournament was the last test for the Horsemen before league play.

The Sleepy Hollow varsity boys' basketball team lost in the first round of the 13th annual George Budries Basketball Tournament at Yorktown High School on Monday.

The Headless Horsemen fell to 5 and 1 in pre-season play after a 71-53 loss to Horace Greeley High School.

"It was a challenge, it was a test," said head coach Tony Baxter. "They were the better team."

Justin Best led the Horsemen in scoring with 14 points during the game, followed by Chris Fahey with 11 points.

Although Sleepy Hollow couldn't best the Greeley Quakers, Baxter said the game allowed the team to gauge their competitiveness before diving into full-time regular season next week.

"Horace Greeley is a very talented team and a very good team," he said. "They were by far the best team we played all year.

"That's why I like this tournament—we play teams we don't normally play during the year and they test us and tell us where we are at any point in the season," Baxter said. "They really reminded us that we have a long way to go."

Four teams including Sleepy Hollow are competing in the non-League, George Budries Basketball Tournament: Iona Prep's varsity B-team , Horace Greeley High School's varsity team and Yorktown High School's varsity team. The two-bracket tournament wraps up on Tuesday.

The Headless Horesmen play for third place on Tuesday against Iona Prep's varsity B-team, which lost to Yorktown by 40 points Monday night.
