Lane Closures on the Tappan Zee Bridge Scheduled for Thursday Night
All work in the first repair phase should be completed by the Friday morning commute.
TARRYTOWN, NY — The Thruway Authority will close two lanes on the southbound Tappan Zee Bridge Thursday, July 21 beginning at 8 p.m. in order to expedite repairs to damage caused Tuesday when a crane boom collapsed.
All three northbound lanes will remain open to traffic during the work, which is phase one of the repairs.
Around noon Tuesday, July 19, a pylon-driving boom fell across all six lanes of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Southbound motorists were stuck on the bridge for several hours while crews took the boom apart and median dividers were removed, allowing cars and truck to turn around and head back to Rockland County.
There was damage to the surface of the bridge and to the portion underneath the southernmost lane.

No one was killed, but there were a few minor injuries.
Northbound lanes were opened around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, with two lanes on the southbound side opening later in the evening.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, southbound traffic at Exit 11—Nyack-South Nyack-US Route 9W—will be reduced to one lane until the work is completed around 5 a.m. Friday.
The Thruway Authority said that one lane will always be open except for a 20-minute period expected to begin at 9:30 p.m.
State Police will stop and hold all traffic approaching the bridge at that time beginning from Exit 10.
Following completion of the overnight repair work, traffic will resume on three northbound and three southbound lanes in time for the morning commute.
Phase two of the repair work on the far right lane will be announced in the coming days, the Thruway Authority said.
Motorists should expect delays during the overnight period and seek alternate routes.
Lane closures are subject to change due to traffic, weather or emergencies.
