Letter To The Editor: NY Does Not Need a Bathroom Ban
The author of the letter is a Sleepy Hollow resident.

On Thursday’s Fios1 debate, Sen. Terrence Murphy showed his true colors to District 40 by saying he would not protect transgender people in our region. It was jaw-dropping to watch him openly mock the validity of a marginalized community, stating, “Some people go in, today, they’re a guy today, they’re girl tomorrow.” When further pushed on how he’d legislate in light of President Trump’s call to erase non-binary gender identity, he said he would “never” allow “a guy who thinks he’s a girl today” to enter a women’s restroom.
An irrational, angry part of me wants to put up my dukes and start name-calling, but the truth is, we are dealing with a dangerously uniformed person. It would simply be sad if he wasn’t in power, but Murphy’s vote influences actual legislation in Albany. To many, this is terrifying. We can’t be represented by someone unwilling to learn and empathize outside his experience. We can’t be represented by a man who believes ugly laws that are ripping other states apart aren’t a bad idea.
On the flip side, his opponent Pete Harckham called Trump’s plan “barbaric” and asked, “How do you regulate the way somebody is?” He vowed to protect transgender people and wisely added, “An attack on the weakest among us is an attack on all of us.”
