Mustangs Come to Play

The Mustangs opened the AYSO National games against the girls from Palos Verdes,CA.  These girls had just finished third in the California AYSO Extra state championships and were expecting an easy match from the Tarrytown girls.  At kickoff the Temperature was 101 degrees and 105 by the end of the game.  Tarrytown played great but still went down 1-0 by halftime and 2-0 in the third quarter.  The Mustangs came on strong in the fourth quarter shocking Palos Verdes with a goal from Samantha Nutig off a corner kick from Lena Swenon.  The Mustangs pressured until the end but could not make up the difference falling 2-1.
The second team to face the Mustangs was home team Riverside who had recently come in second in a large regional tournament in San Diego. Riverside had a 1 year age and significant size advantage as well.  With the temperature down to 91 degrees the Mustangs opened quick with Julia costa intercepting a defenders kick and crossing to Taylor Macca for the score.  Talia Fante then scored second off a cross from Taylor Macca putting the Mustangs up 2 at halftime.  With the sun setting in the second half, the Mustangs were battling severe glare and fatigue.  Sadie Swenson and Sophie Sylves-Berry had to leave the game for exhaustion and Taylor Macca went down in the fourth quarter with an ankle sprain.  Riverside managed to tie the game on two high goals when keeper Julia Costa was blinded by the sun.  The Mustangs now lick their wounds and prepare for games against Long Beach, California and Flagstaff, Arizona on Friday.

Over in Torrence California, the under age 10 Strikers led by Matt Evans struggled against Tuscon, Arizona and Camarillo California losing 4-1 and 6-1.
