On Saturday, July 5th the Mustang girls defeated Diamond Head, Hawaii 1-0 at the AYSO national games in Riverside, California. The winning goal came in the third quarter when Sophie Sylves-Berry caught the rebound off a shot from Talia Fante, passed it back to open midfielder Julia Costa who powered the ball past the Hawaiian keeper.
Despite the 101 degree temperature, the offense kept pressure all game with great efforts from Emma Clarke, Maya Weitzen, Samantha Livingston, Samantha Nutig and Taylor Macca. The defense earned their first tournament shutout with stellar play from Sadie Swenson, Maddy Navin, Lena Swenson, and Carolina Lopez. Carolina Lopez took the lion share of play time at keeper this game and for the tournament, while Julia Costa and Samantha Nutig played flawless as well.
The Mustangs end the tournament as the most successful Tarrytown team in the history of the games with 1 win, 1 tie, and 5 goals. The Mustangs are only the second Tarrytown team to ever win a game at the AYSO biannual Games.
Over in Torrence, California the younger Strikers led by Matt Evans had a successful tournament as well, earning a tie against Utah 3-3 and scoring seven goals in the tournament. The previous record of goals scored in this tournament by Tarrytown teams is believed to be 2.
The Mustang girls return to New York today and will soon begin summer practice to prepare for next year when they make the move to club soccer in the Westchester Youth Soccer league. New players Brittany Alban, Isabella Chambers, and Lily Rodriguez will be joining the team.
