Neustadt Tiffany Collection Coming To Lyndhurst Mansion

The Tiffany works will be on display through September.

TARRYTOWN, NY — The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass is lending works from its renowned collection to the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, which shares connections with Gilded Age industrialists who were significant patrons of Louis C. Tiffany. The works on loan from The Neustadt, including one vibrant window and three exceptional lamps, complement and augment other works by Tiffany in each of these museum collections.

Lindsy Parrot, the Neustadt's executive director and curator, said she was thrilled to be sharing significant works from the collection with two museums in the greater New York metropolitan area. The other museum is the Heckscher Museum of Art, in Huntington, Suffolk County.

"These loans are particularly meaningful because both institutions are connected with noteworthy clients of Louis C. Tiffany," she said. "August Heckscher, founder of the Heckscher Museum, and Helen Gould, former owner of Lyndhurst, commissioned important decoration for their private homes as well as public buildings that benefited from their philanthropy.”

Three outstanding lamps from The Neustadt’s collection, including the Peony, Dragonfly and Heavy Ribs, shine in Lyndhurst’s latest exhibition focusing on Tiffany’s early career as a painter and decorator. Interestingly, this selection references three Tiffany lamps originally owned by Gould.

"Becoming Tiffany: From Hudson Valley Painter to Gilded Age Tastemaker" will be on display from June 1 through Sept. 24 at the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown.

Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), one of America’s most acclaimed artists, revolutionized the art of stained glass at the turn of the 20th century, according to a spokesman. Tiffany introduced a bold new aesthetic with the manufacture of opalescent sheet glass in an endless array of rich colors and intriguing patterns and textures at his long-closed furnaces in Corona, Queens.

The Neustadt is a premier collection of Louis C. Tiffany’s celebrated lamps, windows, metalwork, and rare archival materials. The collection also boasts a unique Tiffany Glass Archive, comprised of more than a quarter of a million examples of original Tiffany flat glass and glass jewels. This archive allows The Neustadt to interpret its collections through the lens of materials and process, offering visitors an unparalleled opportunity to experience Tiffany glass. Dedicated to preservation, scholarship, education, and connoisseurship, the organization provides an in-depth look at the artistry of the Tiffany Studios and its contribution to the history of design in America. The Neustadt is committed to sharing this story and its collections with diverse audiences through public programs, publications, its gallery at the Queens Museum in New York City, and exhibitions that travel to museums nationwide.
