On rediscovering a piece

The last time I ran through my performance piece "Endless Laundry" was two months ago at the Rivertown Artist's Workshop debut of their new family contemporary dance series 'SMALL HOUSE."

So here I am, the day before another performance, jogging through my sweaty memory of phrases, musical cues and interactions with my props. This piece is so messy for me-literally and figuratively. For 9 minutes or so on stage, I am either twirling around with my laundry, covered in tiny shirts and socks, sliding through massive piles of clean clothes, jumping over an overflowing laundry basket or lovingly hugging dresses that my girls have outgrown. The laundry piles are my dance partners, my muse, my nemesis!

To dive into this piece again is to yield to one of the forces in my life that IS ENDLESS...unstoppable, necessary, sometimes relaxing, sometimes makes me feel very accomplished, sometimes brings me face to face with my inadequacies, and brings me into direct contact with the nuances and struggles that accompanies loving people so much.

The laundry basket sits in the middle of the studio, sunlight illuminating  rainbow colors and random socks that have been tossed out of the basket.  I collect the clothing stragglers, do another run-through, then head home.

Where there's another basket of laundry to demand my attention.
